Spring / Summer 2011

We finally made it back to the boat project on July 18th, 2011 with a whole raft of things to do. We had a hard time leaving with a whole bunch of last minute things to do. It was about 110 degrees when we left so we are happy to be up here in balmy 68 degrees.
The boat was in great shape. The tarp did the trick and she stayed warm and dry inside. It was just like the day we left it.
So now that I have decided to leave her open year round I need to do the following outside work.
As we progress through the summer I will put green checkmarks next to the completed items.
I am going to attempt to get all the outside work done while the sun shines (which is rare here).
Some of these are items are left over from last year. Bad Gary.
Step 1: Repair the aft deck.
  1. Remove the damaged railing
  2. Rip up the old canvas
  3. Repair the deck underneath
  4. Install Sani-tred rubber deck coating
  5. Prime with perma-tex.
  6. Apply 1 coat of LRB to waterproof the deck with a membrane.
  7. Apply no-slip granules to a coating of LRB
  8. Final coat with Perma-Flex AL (UV preventative and final seal)
  • Propane lockers
    1. Build propane lockers, 1 on each side of the companionway.
    2. Seal with Sani-Tred
    3. Build locker lids, seal with sani-tred and no slip.
    4. Install hardware and locker lids.
  • Design and build the pilots seat as a locker for the generator.

Step 3: Convert anchor windlass from hydraulic to electric. Thanks to John Sample, a genius when it comes to fabricating, made this a reality by building a flange to fit the motor to the windlass.
    1. Paint motor adaptor
    2. Make gasket
    3. Assemble and test.
    4. Build relay junction box, and battery mount, and install in forward wall of v-berth.
    5. Install 2/0 cable from pilot house batteries to the V-Berth. (This will be for emergency running of the windlass should the battery fail).
    6. Run cables from the deck area to the relay junction box.
    7. Install windlass on deck
    • Carve out the sampson post so the new motor will fit.
    • Wire it to the cables coming from deck.
    • Test it by running the anchor chain out and back.
Step 4: Sand and refinish all the wood that has been affected by the weather.
Step 5: Repair the galley walls where the pine panels swelled up and buckled out.
Step 6: Install starboard side stairs from the deck up to the aft deck.
Step 7: Re-caulk around all the windows.
