Miscellaneous - 2023

Dorade Boxes refinished by Gnettie ! The decks have taken a beating because of all the shnibbles from the butyl rubber. They fall on deck then I step in them and they become a spot that's hard to remove.

This is a section I cleaned with a toothbrush and Brush Cleaner. Some of the canvas lifted and I found a rotted section on the side. Filled with epoxy and it is now ready for Bondo then Leak Seal. Note: Bondo, the real bondo is 22.00 a quart at Ace Hardware and $75.00 a gallon. While we were building the boat a gallon was $14.00. FJB

How about this for a story. I noticed that the port deck was spongy when you walked on it. Oh shit ! A reminder of the time the whole deck was rotted and I had to replace it all and fiber glass over it. See 2010 Deck Repair.
I took off the diesel deck filler and this is what I found. The plywood has delaminated ! The screws for the deck fill didn't go all the way through and from us walking on it is cracked in the middle. Under the filler it drops down but closer aft it raises up. Need to noodle the idea of how to glue it back together.
Christina, an expert on deck fittings told me to only use 3M 4200 for the bedding. It is an adhesive sealer that can be removed. I only knew about 5200 which is impossible to get off once it hardened up. So here are the starboard deck fittings bedded with 4200.
If I had used it on the port side last year I may not have had the trouble with the plywood splitting. Hind sight is always 20-20.

Another "Oh Shit" moment. I saw a small crack in the side of the starboard locker, and low and behold the water got in there and took out the side. Just a small section, but this happened only over 1 winter, because everything was repaired and checked last season. All cleaned out and epoxied with rot stop.

New wood fitted.

Decided to put flex seal all around the aft cabin top between the hull and the wood trim. This should keep the water out. This the starboard side upper hull trim board. It was rotted in spots so I treated and sealed it up with Sculpwood Putty. Ready for Spar Varnish.

The port side was okay, no rot. The starboard side was always out on the weather side when we were building it. The port side was by the shop so it was really protected.
Once they are Spar Varnished I can install my rail supports. See Aft Deck Rail Supports
