Aft Deck Railing - 2023

My neighbor Carl taught me a lesson on how to remove old varnish. No scraping, just use a heat gun and a putty knife. Works great, saves time and a lot of sandpaper. Rails removed and safety lines installed.

On saw horses ready for final sanding and varnishing. Would you believe that Cetol is now 65.00 a quart at Ace Hardware. Way beyond our budget, so after a lot of research we are going to use Spar Varnish Urethane. It can go over anything else and it is only 27.00 a quart. Gnettie doing her magic, 3 coats of Spar Varnish Urethane.

Removed the uprights in order to sand, repair and fair the rail. First coat of Spar Varnish !!

The aft bottom rail is in bad shape underneath. I was able to soften the epoxy plugs to expose the tops of the lag bolts. I am going to remove it and work on it on the saw horses. Now that the rail is removed from the ship I have easy access to the back plate (see Boomkin page)and the deck, which needs to be sealed from the weather. Once everything is assembled it is not really visible so I am going to flex seal the seam between the wooden back plate and the aft deck. In fact I will do this all around the aft deck. When attempting to take it off all the bolts broke. Good sign, nothing rotten underneath. The board popped right off, gorilla glue failed big time.

Starboard railing support glued in an ready to sand. Underneath already coated with 3 coats of spar varnish. 2 coats on !

Aft rail complete.
