Steering System - 2020

The steering system consists of 2 Wagner 701 Helm pumps and a 700-0028 Hydraulic cylinder, 1 1/2" X 7" throw.
I rebuild them all back in 2010.
August 9, 2020. I filled them and both helm pumps are leaking on the shaft seal. So I'll need to order seal kits for both.
For some reason I failed to install the 3d line between the upper and lower helm pumps as specified by Wagner.
I ended up drilling the tiller arm exactly as per Wagner specs 6.125" from center of rudder shaft. This gives a 35° rudder movement each way. Installed and ready for filling with fluid. I will have to bleed the lines at each end of the cylinder which will be a real messy job. The newer cylinders have bleeding inserts with a plastic hose to make the job a lot easier.

This is the lower helm at the inside steering station. The little black cap you see is where I'll fill the system with hydraulic fluid. Once filled on the lower helm station I will fill at the upper outside station. The wooden hub insert you see here is cracked and the one on the aft helm is missing, so I'll print new ones this fall on the 3d Printer. I had to get rid of the wooden wheel on the upper helm I had for many years as it was only a decorative one and slowly fell apart. I got 2 of these vintage wheels with the Wagner Steering System. Then I read the specs today that the Wagner steering system is limited to a 24" wheel maximum.

I needed to put another hydraulic line through the deck for the aft steering pump, so I decided to make a big hole and install a 2" pvc pipe. This way I can easily add more stuff later on. Of course I had to take the whole helm station apart. Hole cut, ready for pipe. The center hole where the cable came through will be sealed with a couch bolt and butyl rubber.

Hole view from aft cabin, showing the thickness of the deck. 2" PVC pipe glued in.

3 hydraulic lines and a cable up through the new pipe. When I drained the 2 upper hydraulic lines into a small container I noticed what appears to be wood chips in the drained oil. Therefore I need to flush all the lines before refilling the system. I also need to make sure there are no contaninents in the hydraulic cyclinder. It's all coming back together. I put an oil absorbing cloth in the bottom to soak up hydraulic oil should there be a leak.

Lock-valve taken apart and cleaned. The little piston you see on the lower right was seized inside the body. Body of the valve looks good. A thorough washing and it can go back together.

Upper helm coming together. I had a leak in the starboard line where the compression ring went in sideways? Lots of air in the lines. Will keep working the air out by going all the way from stop to stop and it should smooth out.
