Companionway Doors - 2010

With the incomplete hatch cover in place it is time to build the doors.
Before I install the side pieces that hold the hatch from lifting off, I will need to build the doors to make sure everything fits. First I make a template out of cardboard and fit it to the opening.

Once the template is fitted I cut the plywood which will actually be 2 doors when I am done. Rough cutting the teak finish ply.

I am gluing down the finish teak ply with contact cement. Partially sanded but I had to check to see what the hardware will look like installed.

Double Door set in place and held by the hinges. These are pin hinges that allow the doors to pull up and off. Tape underneath will temporarily prevent the edge from chipping . Now take it off again and put on a coat of Cetol. This will protect the edges from chipping off and other damage when I am working with it.

Here is the double door now 2 single doors. I was very nervous cutting it in half, one screw up with the saw and I would have to start all over again. Took me 2 days to finally fit the doors.

First I had to grind off some wood at the rear of the hatch cover so the hatch would come out farther forward and provide an overhang for the doors. The rear area also has to sit against a weather strip. I tested it with a sheet of paper. Then I had to shave off tops of the doors so I could accommodate the front edge of the hatch and for weather stripping. Hinges are fit and ready to put back on the ship.
Here is the back of the doors showing the FRP backing. The black area is cut out for the companionway stoop.

Here they are all done with lock clasp in place.
