My friend of 20 years Fred Merrifield volunteered his expertise as a master carpenter and built this beautiful pilot house door. The frame is solid mahogany, with a teak insert in the lower section, and a section for a window in the upper section. | |
Here is the frame with the first coat of Cetol. | Here it is with the lower frame in place, and another coat of Cetol. The framing strips are made from Sura Oak from Indonesia |
I built the frames on an angle to allow water to flow out onto the deck. The front section is designed to keep heavy weather from getting in the seams. | An inside view of the door in its new home. |
Here is a side view. | This shows the door completely installed in the open position with the glass installed! |
Ackowledgments: Wish to thank Fred Merrifield for his beautiful carpentry work in creating the pilot house door. Every time I open and close it and sit behind it with a hot drink on a cool winter day, I will be thinking of Fred. Wish to thank Fred Thompson owner of Bud Barton's in Marysville, WA for his timely supply and delivery of the bronze tinted glass. Fred supplied all the glass for the ship which had to be cut on all kinds of strange angles to get them to fit all the opeings I created. Fred recommended the bronze tint for the Sharon Rose and she does look great!! |

Here she is all closed up, weather tight and ready for the winter rains and wind. | Thank you Fred M. and Fred T. |
A summers work well done!! |
