Spring / Summer - 1999

This summer was eventful and we accomplished a lot.
There are not that many photos from this year, but check out the videos for more details.
She was dedicated in memory of Jeanette's sister, Sharon Rose, who died way before her time. We drank a toast to the new ship, and finished the champagne.
Her official christening will take place before launching, which will be the usual breaking of bottles and drinking of more champagne. I may even slip a few beers past my lips.
Ken and Jo Dams showed up to help with canvasing the decks. See video for more details.

Cap Rail
We set up an area in the carport to build the cap rail. Richard sold us the old growth fir we used to build it.

Gnettie helping out in the workshop. Richard putting on the finishing touches.

Cutting out the Scuppers
Here I am placing the patterns on the hull for the scuppers. One is cut out and I am to see if it looks right for the second and third.

After the Christening
Ken and Jo Dams after the christening. For full videos of the christening see the video labeled 1999 on the home page under Videos. Notice the canvas is all installed.

This is me atop her cabin with tent cover off. Where I am standing is where the main mast will be. As you can see the windows are all in, but alas no door as yet. From the original ship design I have done a few modifications.

As you can see the deck goes up towards the rear to a poop deck. This gives us standing headroom in the aft cabin. In the back of the aft cabin will be 4 square windows as befitting an old pirate ship.

The hull is fiberglass that I made myself from the ground up. First you built a mold of the hull out of wood upside down, then you lay fiberglass all over until you have a hull. Then you turn it right side up and remove the mold. The parts of the mold become the scaffolding, etc. So what you see here was hand made.

The white filler is a compound I mixed up and my friend Billy applied to protect the actual fiberglass hull. This filler is the stuff we then sand out to fair the hull. The actual thickness of the fiberglass in the keel area is around 1.5 - 2.0 inches thick and it tapers to about 3/4 to 1.0 along the bullworks.
All covered for the winter. Nick is working on finishing touches.
